Nso Islamic Cultural and Development Association (NICDA), Empowers Over 160 Girls with Menstrual Health Education in Yaoundé

On July 12, 2026, More than 160 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 participated in a comprehensive menstrual education seminar organized by the Nso Islamic Cultural and Development Association (NICDA) at the NICDA Centre in Nkolmesseng, Yaoundé. The initiative aimed to equip young girls with accurate knowledge about menstruation, menstrual hygiene management, and Islamic teachings on menstrual health.

The educational seminar, which lasted for over two hours, was facilitated by Lukong Ushena Bongfen and Vernyuy Zeinab after receiving approval from the NICDA Elite. Organizers described the initiative as an important step toward promoting health, dignity, confidence, and informed decision-making among young Muslim girls.

During the seminar, participants received detailed lessons on the biological process of menstruation, understanding the menstrual cycle, and the importance of using a menstrual calendar to monitor and predict menstrual periods. The facilitators also provided practical demonstrations on proper menstrual hygiene management. Girls were shown how to correctly use disposable and reusable sanitary pads, maintain personal hygiene during menstruation, and safely use complementary hygiene products such as hand sanitizers and menstrual wipes.
The practical sessions created an open and supportive learning environment where participants could freely ask questions and share experiences.
One of the key highlights of the seminar was its focus on breaking cultural myths and social stigma surrounding menstruation.
Facilitators addressed common misconceptions about menstruation and discussed the Do’s and Don’ts during menstruation according to Islamic teachings. Participants were also guided through the Sunnah method of performing Ghusl (ritual purification bath) after menstruation, helping young Muslim girls better understand the religious aspects associated with menstrual purity.

Girls who had not yet begun menstruating actively participated by asking questions, while those already experiencing menstrual cycles expressed appreciation for the practical guidance and the opportunity to discuss an often-sensitive topic in a safe environment.

To facilitate practical demonstrations, the organizers initially purchased disposable sanitary pads using their own resources. Additional support came through a generous donation of 100,000 FCFA, made possible by a NICDA member working with the Rotary Club of Kumbo and channeled through Alhaji Yaouba. The contribution enabled organizers to purchase and distribute menstrual hygiene kits, including: Disposable sanitary pads, Reusable sanitary pads, Hand sanitizers, Pants, Wet wipes. Every participant received a menstrual hygiene package at the conclusion of the seminar. Positive Impact on Young Girls

According to the facilitators, attendance exceeded expectations, reflecting the growing need for menstrual health education within communities. They noted that the seminar significantly improved participants’ understanding of menstruation, encouraged healthy hygiene practices, challenged harmful stigma, and empowered girls to manage menstruation confidently while respecting Islamic values and teachings.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a closing prayer led by NICDA Shura member Mr. Lukong Aruna alongside NICDA President Alhaji Sitan Muhammad. Organizers say the NICDA Menstrual Education Initiative will continue expanding similar programs to reach more girls and contribute to ending menstrual stigma in Muslim communities across Cameroon.
