African Union Applauds Biya’s Victory, Cameroonians Mourn Democracy

Shocking to some Cameroonians, On 28 October 2025, the African Union Commission (AUC) officially acknowledged the proclamation of the final results of Cameroon’s presidential election held on 12 October 2025. In a statement issued by Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Commission extended its congratulations to His Excellency Paul BIYA on his re-election as President of the Republic of Cameroon. This message is coming amid the rising protests in the country as a result of what many describe as the massive rigging of elections in the history of Cameroon. Mostly Youths, Cameroonians are protesting against the election result, in support of ISSA Tchiroma, who had earlier claimed Victory.

While recognizing the outcome of the democratic process, the Chairperson expressed deep concern over reports of violence, repression, and arrests targeting protesters and political actors in the aftermath of the election. These developments have cast a shadow over what should be a moment of national reflection and renewal.

The Chairperson urged all institutional and political actors in Cameroon to exercise restraint and prioritize the preservation of social cohesion, peace, and stability. In his appeal, he emphasized the importance of inclusive national dialogue and consultation with all political stakeholders. Such engagement, he noted, is essential to forging consensus and fostering unity in the spirit of collective security.

Reaffirming the African Union’s commitment, the Chairperson pledged ongoing support for the people of Cameroon in their pursuit of democracy, social justice, and the rule of law. The AU stands ready to assist in efforts that promote transparency, inclusivity, and peaceful political engagement.

As Cameroon navigates this critical juncture, the message from the African Union is clear: the path forward must be built on dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared vision for a peaceful and democratic future.
